Eve

Eve

(1979)

It was originally intended to be an album inspired by great women in history. It evolved into an appreciation of the strengths and characteristics of women in general and the problems they face in the world of men.

Memories

Eric had intended that it be about great women in history. But his ideas changed and it evolved into an album about present day relationships, in particular the strengths of women and the shortcomings of men, although it’s perhaps hard to deduce this bearing in mind the album cover which appears unflattering to women. This was certainly not Eric’s intention.

It has often been thought in the past that EVE was the only APP album to feature a female lead vocalist. This actually isn’t the case as on I Robot, Jaki Whitren lends her female vocal to part of ‘Some Other Time’ and also on the same album Hilary Western sings the operatic soprano part at the beginning of I Robot.

Eric recalls that the song ‘If I Could Change Your Mind’ was originally inspired by Joan of Arc and would have had a very different lyric.

On the theme of strong women, Eric’s mother-in-law was named Eve!

Lucifer

(Instrumental)

You Lie Down With Dogs

You’re such a cool woman but I love you
Such a cruel woman but I love you
Open up your eyes and realise
You’re such a fool woman but I love you
But give me all that you’ve got to give
Cause it sure feels good to me

I’m not your only man I’m just your lover
Not your only man just another
Open up your eyes and realise
I’m gonna take what I can like any other
I’ll say any damn thing that you want me to
Cause it don’t mean a thing to me

Well
You lie down with dogs you fall in with thieves
(You’re gonna catch something but you do as you please)
You’re scratchin’ an itch that nothing can ease
You lie down with dogs you get up with fleas

Get out and find yourself another lover
Why don’t you find yourself another lover
Open up your eyen and realise
You don’t mean nothing to me I’m not your mother
You gave me all that you had to give
But there’s a whole lotta fish in the sea

Well
You lie down with dogs you fall in with thieves
(You’re gonna catch something but you do as you please)
You’re scratchin’ an itch that nothing can ease
You lie down with dogs you get up with fleas

Well
You lie down with dogs you fall in with thieves
(You’re gonna catch something but you do as you please)
You’re gonna catch something but you do as you please

You’re scratchin’ an itch that nothing can ease
(You’re falling, you’re falling, you’re falling, you’re falling)
You lie down with dogs you get up with fleas

I’d Rather Be A Man

You don’t fool me with your tinted eyes and make-up
The firebird hides in shadow when you wake up
Your golden hair is black
Your jeans are tight but your hide is slack
Try it on the company but you don’t fool me

Well I’d rather be a man than play my role like you do
I’d rather be a man than sin my soul like you do
I’d rather be a man than slave the way that you do
I’d rather be a man cause a man don’t crawl like you do

You don’t fool me with your easy lies and fables
You won’t see me in ten buck furs and sables
You sparkle like a snake
The wine is real but the glass is fake
Blame it on the apple tree but you don’t fool me

Well I’d rather be a man than play my role like you do
I’d rather be a man than sin my soul like you do
Well I’d rather be a man than slave the way that you do
I’d rather be a man cause a man don’t crawl like you do

Your golden hair is black
Your jeans are tight but your hide is slack
Try it on the company but you don’t fool me

Well I’d rather be a man than play my role like you do
I’d rather be a man than sin my soul like you do
Well I’d rather be a man than slave the way that you do
I’d rather be a man cause a man don’t crawl like you do

I’d rather be a man cause a man don’t crawl like you
I’d rather be a man cause I wouldn’t wanna be like you

You Won’t Be There

Show me a promised land and I will go anywhere
And if you ask me to take my time I’ll wait for years

I’ll hold on though the whole world tells me I’m wrong
Someday, someday
But it seems so long

Ask me to prove my love and I will do anything
So if they turn off the light of the sun why should I care

I’ll hold on though the whole world tells me I’m wrong
Then in the morning as you leave me
You touch my hand to show how much you care
But just when I need you
You won’t be there

I’ll hold on but I need a shoulder to lean on
Why if you love me must you leave me
Why are you going anywhere
Why must our love be something in the air
Cause just when I need you
You won’t be there
You won’t be there

Winding Me Up

Well it was only a game she was mine for the asking
And I’d figured the whole thing out
When she told me her name it was more than a feeling
There wasn’t any doubt

Well it felt so good it was too hard to break it
Too much for me to explain
But in a matter of time I’m gonna be myself again

You’ve been
Winding me up too long
I’m over my head is it day or night
Cause woman you ain’t so strong
But you caught me by surprise
Burned me with your eyes
Cut me down to size
Saw through my disguise

Well it was only a game she was only a number
But I figured it out all wrong
Every time that I said I’ll move on tomorrow
I hung around too long

Well it felt so good it was too hard to break it
Too much before me to face
Now I got nowhere to run she knows my every hidin’ place

You’ve been Winding me up too long
I’m over my head is it day or night
Cause woman you ain’t so strong
But you caught me by surprise
Burned me with your eyes
Cut me down to size
Saw through my disguise

Winding me up too long
I’m over my head is it day or night
Cause woman you ain’t so strong
But you caught me by surprise
Burned me with your eyes
Cut me down to size
Beat me to the prize
Hurt me with your lies
Burned me with your eyes
Cut me down to size
Saw through my disguise

Damned If I Do

I ain’t got a heart of stone
I’m hurtin’ more now than I’ve ever known
If you mean the things you said
I’m gonna wind up outa my head

Can’t sleep alone at night
I just can’t seem to get it right
Damned if I do
Damned if I don’t but I love you

I don’t want to tie you down
Don’t need a reason to have you around
But each time you walk away
Don’t be surprised if I ask you to stay

Can’t sleep alone at night
I just can’t seem to get it right
Damned if I do
And I’m damned if I don’t but I love you
I said I’m damned if I do
And I’m damned if I don’t cause I love you

I ain’t got a heart of stone
You haven’t left me a mind of my own
But it’s got such a hold on me
I don’t think I could ever be free

How can I survive
I’m fighting to keep myself alive
I’m damned if I do
Damned if I don’t but I love you

Can’t seem to see the light
I’ve done everything but I can’t get it right
Damned if I do
Damned if I don’t but I love you

Don’t Hold Back

Some are born to lose their heads
And some are born to use them
And some will never know their ends
And some are born to choose them

Don’t you let your fantasies be blinded by the light
You don’t have to save your wildest dreams for the night

Dont hold back, don’t hold back, don’t hold back, reach out
Touch the sky with your mind’s eye, don’t be afraid to reach out

Some you win and some you lose
And some will bring you sorrow
Some are born to lead the rest
And some are born to follow

Don’t rely on miracles to open any door
And don’t you let a shadow be your guide anymore

Dont hold back, don’t hold back, don’t hold back, reach out
Touch the sky with your mind’s eye, don’t be afraid to reach out

Ride the wave of destiny
Rise above the crest
And believe everything that happens to you happens for the best
Don’t allow the world of men
To turn your head no more
Cause if you can’t let yourself go
What are you saving yourself for?

Dont hold back, don’t hold back, don’t hold back, reach out
Touch the sky with your mind’s eye, don’t be afraid to reach out

Don’t you let your fantasies be blinded by the light
For you don’t have to save your wildest dreams for the night

Dont hold back, don’t hold back, don’t hold back, reach out
Touch the sky with your mind’s eye, don’t be afraid to reach out

Secret Garden

(Instrumental)

If I Could Change Your Mind

I prefer to spend my time in solitary ways
Keeping myself to myself
Can’t pretend that it’s been easy since you went away
Living with somebody else

If you should change your mind
If you would turn around and look behind
If you could see me the way I used to be

At the risk of bringing back the sorrow and despair
I would do it all again
Holding on to memories and pretending not to care
Knowing that the show was soon to end
If only I could change your mind
If only you would change
If I had the chance I’d do it all again
I would do it all again

I remember windy shores on melancholy days
Drifting along with the tide
And the joy of simple things and ordinary ways
Taking it all in my stride

If you should change your mind
If I could let you see what lies behind
If you could need me the way it used to be

Even for the moment of the happy times we shared
Living in my dreams since then
At the risk of losing only castles in the air
Come with me and we can try again
Oh, if I could change your mind

Can’t pretend it’s not been lonely since you went away
Oh, if only I could change your mind

Bonus Tracks

Expanded Edition Includes these Bonus Tracks:

Elsie’s Theme from The Sicilian Defence (The Project That Never Was)

As many Project aficionados will know, a largely experimental album entitled ‘The Sicilian Defence’ was recorded at the same time as EVE. This work became the subject of a major disagreement with the record company and was shelved. However, in the process of searching the archives for bonus material, at the label’s request, we have included a track (previously untitled), which is dedicated to Eric’s newest granddaughter.

Lucifer (Demo)

This was the first ever demo, recorded on a simple Revox home recording setup in a beachfront apartment in Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco. Super Bear, the studio where Eve was recorded was a one hour drive up into the hills above Nice, France.

Secret Garden (Early Rough Mix)

This rough mix comes from the halfway stage of the recording process and highlights some of the sounds and effects that were less prominent on the final versions.

Damned If I Do (Rough Mix)

This is a mix with the strings very forward, so we could hear them in detail. The rough mix in the background might have been tailored for the orchestral players to hear while they added their contribution. Drums are a particular nuisance if they spill out into the orchestra mics from the monitor speakers or headphones of the orchestral players – so on this mix they are at a low level, as is the guitar solo. Very often, different sections of the orchestra would be recorded separately in order to have full control over each orchestral group without affecting the others. This would explain the absence of the horns (used on the final version), which were recorded on their own on a later take.

Don’t Hold Back (Vocal Rehearsal Rough Mix)

When a vocal is recorded, often many versions are put onto tape and by a process of cherry picking lines, phrases or words, the optimum master vocal is compiled. In this early stage of recording her vocal, Clare Torry is experimenting and laying down several versions of sections of the song, which would eventually be condensed into the master lead vocal. (Incidentally for those who don’t already know, Alan had originally put Clare’s name forward as a singer to work with Pink Floyd on Dark Side of the Moon.)

Lucifer (Early Rough Mix)

In this early studio version, we had added a Morse code buzzer rendition of the letters E V E as per the title of the album. It can be heard here much more prominently than on the final mix.

If I Could Change Your Mind (Rough Mix)

Recording a lead vocal can be a lengthy process and this is a rough snapshot of the track after Lesley Duncan’s vocal was finished. There is also a long section at the end featuring a brass idea, which was ultimately mixed out in order to favour the solo guitar used on the final mix. On this track, as with many others, a longer version is recorded than is actually used, but adding a fade to a track is always done in the final stages. One of Alan’s trademarks as a producer for the APP was elongated tail pieces which he would shorten on the final mix as was the case here.
